One of the great things about volunteering at the Brighterway clinic is that we get to try out theories. You may have seen some of my posts where I ask why people say you can’t do a certain procedure or you can’t scan a patent a certain way. The world of digital implantology is filled with people, I guess like me, who have an opinion of how to do something, but there is very little science out there behind it. This Vet came in for just a lower Locator overdenture. I got to talking to Dr Joe Mehranfar about doing a digital denture from an intra oral scan. He said, “Let’s try it!”, so off I went!! As you may or may not know, digital dentures require a border moulder impression that gets scanned in a lab scanner. I also wanted to see what the big deal was with Pekkton. Pekkton is derived from good ‘ol PEEK. But it is 80% stronger and it has an elastic modulus almost the same as bone. The thought is that since it is less rigid than metal or zirconia it will transmit less stress to the implants and the implant screws. Did the bite with my modified CBCT copy of the patient’s denture. If you come to my course I will show you a better way. 3Shape all metal scan bodies. What an amazing job they did!! Love the characterization!! Now some people have said that with Pekkton or the other enhanced PEEK materials like Juvora and Trilor, you can’t get the full AP spread. In this case we are opposing a full denture. If the patient wants to go with implants on the top, we can just cut off the molars. Non engaging DESS ti bases used.
Sorry about the shot in occlusion, I noticed after that the patient was not biting all the way. The denture fit really well!! I will say that I had some occlusal adjustment, the lab had a hard time with my jig I created, but like I said, I found a better way and will demo it at our Digital Dentistry Live! Course in PHX Sept 12-14 I ended up cutting off the longer non engaging extensions on the ti bases as it felt “tight” when I screwed it down. Patient could not be happier!!! Now he wants to get his uppers done! Thanks again to DESS and Anco Dental Lab for this case. Very happy patient!
