Zirconia is revolutionizing the dental materials world. We all know this, and enjoy it’s predictability, accurate machining, and strength. However, the biggest hurdle has been the esthetic value of zirconia. Sure, there are brands and techniques that can give one a translucent nature to zirconia (5Y-TZP) but it takes a LONG time for sintering, and you start to lose the best part of zirconia: fracture toughness.
All of the dental material manufacturers are busy developing their own take on zirconia. The latest craze has been to have chairside fabricated zirconia that has a blended nature of translucency. The two companies that are leading this charge are Kuraray with their Katana STML material and Ivoclar Vivadent’s ZirCAD Multi. It is a great time to be in dentistry as the materials are improving on a yearly basis!
This bridge was completed with the CEREC system: PrimeScan and MCXL dry milling. It was sintered in the SpeedFire sintering furnace. Polished only with Wagner Rotary instruments, and cemented with a resin-modified glass ionomer.
