I’ve always joked that porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns are “bathtub” crowns because bathtubs were made the same way: metal framework with a ceramic coating. Don’t get me wrong! I know there are some fantastic looking PFM crowns! However, they typically present as monochromatic and opaque. We are lucky sometimes to not have a silver dot on the occlusal surface!
This is a case where a PFM crown was replaced with Dentsply’s Celtra Duo CAD/CAM material in one visit. The nice thing about this material is that it can be milled and simply polished and have over 200 MPa flexural strength. This is higher than any other polished milled material we’ve used in dental CAD/CAM. If you glaze it, the flexural strength allegedly goes to 420 MPa strength. This is great since you get a glaze surface at the same time, and it takes minutes to achieve.
