“The Cerec Dentist: When Are You Enough?”
Dear Dr. Bill:
Currently, I use my Cerec for making crowns only and feel “less than” because I don’t use all the functions Cerec and the Galileos allow me to perform (i.e., zirconia, bridges, placing and designing implants, orthodontics, virtual articulator, smile design, etc). In fact, I’m jealous of my colleagues who use the technology to the maximum.
HELP!!!
Dr. Debbie
Dear Dr. Debbie:
Great question! I have heard others in our Cerec Community express the same concerns and frustrations. At times, learning all the capabilities of the Cerec technology can be overwhelming, especially when you combine that with running a practice and having a home and social life. This requires us to prioritize our lives in order to give it structure.
I would suggest addressing three areas: 1-Goal Setting, 2-Boundary Setting, and 3-Acceptance.
1- Goal Setting: “What are my practice goals and aspirations as it relates to my current and future patient care?” This requires linear and global planning. If your answer is to incorporate some or all of the technology, then methodically plan how you incorporate the continuing education, hands-on training, and office/staff changes to make this happen. If your answer is not to change what you are doing (crowns only), that’s fine. Be happy with your decision!
2- Boundary Setting: You are now encouraged to accept your decision and live with this boundary. Be happy with your plan and decision and stop trying to be a “Super Dentist” and come to terms that we all practice differently. “Pleasing your ego” can be a heavy weight to carry if it’s not what you really want.
3- Acceptance: Acceptance gives you peace with your decision. This doesn’t mean in the future you can’t incorporate more of the Cerec technology but it gives you resolve for the present. Dentistry is ever changing and often times opportunities evolve that allow us to expand our interests and clinical skills.
Best,
Dr. Bill
