I’ve heard the term “prototyping” thrown around the 3D Printed Hybrid world a lot and, at fist, I thought it was just a fancy term for a temp used by those who wanted to sound important. But as I got more experience in Digital Hybrids, I realized its an actual bonafide word! In the world of 3D Printing outside out dentistry, namely engineering, a prototype part is a part made out of plastic that is tested, lets say in an engine, for fit, function and esthetics. Hey, that is just like us! This is the case we did last week and at first, the patient was really happy. Then after wearing and chewing with the hybrid, he noticed he was really biting his teeth and his front 6 teeth looked too prominent. One really nice thing about a printed hybrid vs a PMMA or permanent, is that it can be changed and re printed with minimal cost, especially if you burn out the ti bases. This case was scanned just on the CEREC Primescan and designed by Burbank Dental Lab.
The lab bulked out the buccal corridors of everything posterior to the canines and it helped with our off axis implant in the #4 or 5 area.
In about an hour it was re printed on the EnvisionOne by Envisiontec using their high strength E-Crown 400 and Denture Base 3D which have tensile strengths greater than PMMA. We also added a bit more translucency in the software and that was printed into the teeth. Took about an hour to print both.
You can see in the new STL and resultant prototype we have nicer buccal corridors and hopefully less cheek biting.
Even at the end of the day, the patient felt his two front teeth were a bit long. At this point we can either go to the final with those changes, or make one more set of prototypes. Either way, patient has to be happy and with 3D printing, it doesnt have to cost us $1000s in lab fees to “try before you buy”.
We are doing a CEREC Live Patient Implant Course in Phoenix where we will cover CEREC Guide 2, Scanning with Scan Posts for Abutments and Crowns, as well as demoing full arch scanning with Primescan and Digital Dentures! Feb 20-22 2020. If you are a Trios user we can adapt the hands on for you!
