Ballin’ on a Budget, Digitally: $4500 Scanner, $750 Printer, $50 TZi Crown from Evovle

The cost of going digital is dropping all over the place. And while I still think no one can beat CEREC in terms of patient experience and just all around easiness, there are some out there who are not sure if going all digital is right for them or if they can incorporate the expense and potential disruption of their schedule.  There are still many that don’t scan in the mouth.  They take an impression, pour it up and scan it later when the patient is gone.  No right or wrong  way of doing it.  In this case I wanted to play a little more with my Shining DX scanner that is retailing for $4500 now.  The scanner is great for models, and as far as impressions go, triple trays, which I used in this case.

Evolve Dentistry is a lab/milling center that can design, mill and stain and glaze translucent zirconia crowns for $50 in 2 days.  The fit is incredible.  I printed the dies with the NOW $750 (ugh) Phrozen Shufl printer.  It started at $507 which was just for pre orders.  I still think this is one of the best sub $1000 printers on the market.  If you want a die model STL from Evolve I believe its $15.  

With the exception of a small amount of occlusal adjustment (Josh can you change the offset to 300 microns instead of 200 ?:}) the crown just dropped right in!  At $50 a unit complete that is not bad for a clinically acceptable crown.
